RBA

The Royal Society of British Artists has produced innovative and traditional painting, sculpture and printmaking, spanning three centuries. From James McNeil Whistler, Walter Sickert, L.S. Lowry, Henry Moore, Peter Greenham, Sir Roger De Gray and Carel Weight, to the current outstanding membership, the RBA continues to be a forum for excellence.

Founded in 1823 by a group of artists who wished to break away from the conventions of the Royal Academy, the society still has a forward-looking attitude and uncompromisingly high standards. Under the leadership of the current president, Cav. Romeo Di Girolamo, in line with the society’s charitable status, the RBA is active and influential in art education at all levels.

This includes colleges, universities and assisting schools applying for specialist college status in the visual arts. The society’s main exhibition is in the spring at The Mall Galleries. It is an open exhibition inviting work from young or established artists, with no restrictions on approach or style. The officers and council of the society select work by careful consideration and vote on each individual piece.

The society’s aim is to present the best work by living artists. Work in all mediums is acceptable: oil, acrylic, watercolour, pastel and mixed media. Sculpture, drawings and artists’ prints are welcomed. The society is privileged to once again be taking part in the Henley Festival and hopes that visitors will enjoy the exhibition, which includes some guest exhibitors. The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of the late Anthony Southwell an eminent sculptor, respected past Vice President and much missed friend and colleague.
