BANDSTAND: 6.00pm

Dixie Ticklers Dixie Ticklers

The development of jazz has to be one of the most organic and fascinating stories in music. Dom James and his Dixie Ticklers would like to provide the first chapter for you with an atomic Dixieland explosion. Combining some of the brightest young talent in the UK, with the oldest charts from New Orleans archives, their goal is to entertain with skill and charm.

Kid Ory, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton would hopefully have approved of their renditions of "Salty Dog", "I wish I could Shimmie like my sister Kate" and "Wild Man Blues". These guys are so hot, that even New Orleans enthusiast Woody Allen has a copy of their record.

SALON EARLY: 7:30pm

Fifth Quadrant - The Film Session Fifth Quadrant

The marriage of music and image has been a defining feature of cinema since its earliest days. Even before the advent of "talkies", moving images on the cinema screen were accompanied by live musicians. This evening, FIFTH QUADRANT will explore more flexible relationships between sound and image, presenting a short film with a number of musical accompaniments. The music has been chosen to provide a range of viewing experiences, but also for the links of each work to the history of film music.

Gustav Mahler never wrote for film, but borrowings from his concert works have made a big impact in the cinema. Visconti used Mahler's music to haunting effect in Death inVenice, and more recently Scorsese's Shutter Island, has made effective use of Mahler's early Movement for Piano Quartet. OneAustrian composer who did succeed in Hollywood was Erich Korngold. Before his emigration to America, Korngold was considered one of the brightest compositional talents inVienna. He achieved similar success in the States, but only for his film work.

A movement from one of his unduly neglected chamber pieces will be making a rare appearance this evening. Like Korngold before him, John Williams is now considered the most accomplished master of the Hollywood score. Legend has it that Williams tried to turn down the commission for Schindler's List saying "You need a better composer than I am for this film", to which Spielberg replied "I know, but they're all dead!" In the event, Williams produced one of the most haunting scores in cinematic history, winning the film one of its seven Oscars.
